Outdoor Wife, Outdoor Life
I am almost positive that the phrase “happy wife, happy life” has been uttered by husbands everywhere since the dawn of time. In fact, I think there is even a pictograph implying as much in the Chauvet Cave. Having been married for a little over a week, I am not going to profess to be an expert on the subject of marriage. However, having maintained a lasting relationship while simultaneously pursuing my outdoor passions, I feel qualified as an authority on the outdoor lifestyle. My assessment is that having an outdoor wife is amazing!
In reality, having an outdoor wife is not all that different than a regular wife. It just has an outdoorsy twist. This fact was proven to me on my first day of marriage. While many newlyweds head to tropical islands to sit on beaches, drink exotic cocktails, and relax after the stress of making a lifelong commitment, my new wife and I packed the car instead of suitcases and headed for Acadia National Park. Rather than putting our feet up and slowing down for the week, we hit the trails exploring the park’s summits, ridges, and carriage roads while enjoying the incredible scenery and unique landscape of the park. We even made a little time to sit on the beach, stopping to relax on Sand Beach between hikes up the Beehive and out to Great Head.
Acadia offers visitors incredible hiking, but it’s the climbing that truly attracted this outdoorsy couple. Spending a lazy afternoon enjoying the mellow and scenic oceanside bouldering presented us the perfect opportunity to have a relaxing day next to the water, while engaging in the incredible landscape and keeping our climbing skills sharp. The following day, we headed to Otter Cliffs to climb the imposing walls with the ocean lapping at the bottom of the routes. Being lowered by your spouse down the cliff toward the water is the perfect way to test the trust and confidence you have in your partner. Our only regret was we did not have enough time to visit all of the island’s crags.
A popular belief is that husbands live in fear of being dragged on shopping trips. However, with an outdoorsy wife even the time spent indoors shopping can be good. Shoe shopping is a lot less painful when you’re looking at new trail runners and climbing shoes in Alpenglow Sports. Clothes shopping also offered a pleasant break from activity as we poked through the racks at Cadillac Mountain Sports, Patagonia, and The North Face. Even walking through the island’s numerous art galleries searching for presents to bring home was pleasurable as we admired incredible photos and beautiful paintings of many of the places we had been visiting.
Some people may consider it tacky to talk about how dirty and sweaty they got on their honeymoon, but not an outdoor couple. To an outdoor couple, it’s a badge of honor to have gotten out and explored, adventured, gotten dirty, gotten sweaty, gotten nervous, and shared those experiences with the person they care about the most. After all, honeymoons spent on the beach are certainly romantic, but running along and climbing above the beach is way more fun.
